Abortion Tragedy and Post-Traumatic Effects on Those Who Abort Their Babies

“For You shaped me, inside and out.
You knitted me together in my mother’s womb
long before I took my first breath.
I will offer You my grateful heart,
for I am Your unique creation, filled with wonder and awe.
You have approached even the smallest details with excellence;
Your works are wonderful;
I carry this knowledge deep within my soul.”
Psalm 139:13-14 VOICE

All life is precious to God, no matter what age. Yes, even those millions of tiny seeds of life that are snuffed out by abortion.

About this time each year, a church we pass by lines up long rows of pink and blue crosses to represent the lost lives of unborn children. It’s a humbling sight. In 2015 in SD alone, 444 abortions were reported. Little lives that were never given a choice.

According to WHO, there are over 3000 known abortions per day in the USA alone. At least 125,000 per day throughout the world. Words are not adequate to describe how horrendous and heart-breaking this is.

❤️ I am so sorry, precious little ones. ❤️

Sadly, we can’t bring these babies back, but we can speak up for these little voices who have been silenced and for those who are still in danger. We can tell others they are not just globs of tissue, but lives that are created in God’s image.

10 Weeks Old

At the same time we can be there for women and teens who are struggling. For those who are being deceived, especially the young, vulnerable, and naive. For those who have aborted and now feel such an empty ache in their hearts. Those overwhelmed by shame. Those who wonder if God can ever forgive them or they can forgive themselves. Feelings of aloneness and depression weigh down their hearts and lives. Some even commit suicide.

Many women who have aborted keep it a secret, bearing their burden alone out of fear of being judged, condemned, or ostracized, especially by some Christians.

Abortion is so wrong, but so is condemning others. Jesus set us an example of love, compassion, and forgiveness. Loving like Him bears the burdens of the hurting. Jesus never turns us away, no matter what we have done or not done. He extends His welcoming, loving, forgiving arms to all who are troubled. He can mend a heart that’s torn. He can bring beauty out of ashes.

“The LORD is near the brokenhearted;
He saves those crushed in spirit.”
Psalm 34:18
 “Carry one another’s burdens
and in this way you will fulfill
the requirements of the law of Christ
[that is, the law of Christian love].”
Galatians 6:2 AMP

“You Are Loved”
by Ellie Holcomb

“Some days you’re tired of trying to measure up
You see a girl whose not enough
When you look in the mirror
Some nights all you wanna do is hide
‘Cause every time you look inside
You’re face to face with failure

But you are loved, oh
Not because of what you’ve done, no
Even when your heart has run the other way
Nothing’s gonna change His love
And you are wanted
Not because you are perfect
I know that you don’t think you’re worth that kind of grace
But look into His face you’ll know
That you are loved…”

  1. This is beautiful, Trudy! I love your compassion that shines through both for the unborn babies and for the women who have faced this heartbreaking decision or struggle with the consequences of having had an abortion. It is sad when Christians judge rather than offering love and support. We need to follow Jesus’ example of welcome and compassion. I love the Ellie Holcomb song too- I’ve been listening to that whole album a lot lately!

    • Thank you, Lesley. It’s such a tragedy. My heart weeps for the babies who never had a chance. But also for those who have been misled or are hurting now. May God give us hearts of love and compassion for hurting ones!

  2. You have offered such beautiful words of compassion and love, Trudy. So many women suffer because of having had an abortion; they need our understanding and know that our loving God forgives and heals.
    Blessings to you, my friend!

    • Thank you, Martha. Blessings to you, too! So many live with deep regrets. Yes, our loving God forgives and heals, no matter what we have done or not done. Such amazing grace He has for us! May we daily follow His example of love and compassion!

  3. I love that you chose Psalm 139 to remind us we are fearfully and wonderfully made. I don’t understand why women make the choice to abort their babies, but I imagine they feel backed into a corner with no other choices that they can see.

I lost two babies to miscarriage so praying for any moms out there or women who desire to be moms is part of who I am. I am also praying for those faced with pregnancy that they see and know the beautiful life that is in them. God loves them and the baby more than they might know.

    • I’m so sorry you lost two little ones, Mary. I’m certain that still hurts. I think about that, too, that there are so many women who desire to be mothers. It must weigh even heavier on them to know others don’t want their babies. It’s so sad. Yes, may we keep praying that they see and know the beautiful life in them and how much God loves them and their baby!

  4. Dear Trudy, Yes, life is so beautiful, and HE offers us so much grace! At each step along the way, no matter what or where we’ve been. I pray that we are able to love those around us, to let them know that HIS love is so much greater. There are so many little ones waiting in the arms of the Father in Heaven now, and it breaks our hearts to think of them, grieving over both the miscarriages and the aborted! Oh, may we offer comfort to each hurting soul the Lord brings across our paths. And thank you for sharing this beautiful song too. Love & Hugs! xoxo

    • I am comforted to know those little ones are held in the Father’s arms, tenderly and lovingly. Otherwise the grief over all those little lives would be too much to bear, wouldn’t it? I’m with you, Bettie, in offering comfort to each hurting soul the Lord brings across our paths. Love and hugs to you, too! May God fill us so full of His love that it will spill out over anyone around us!

  5. God have mercy on us all. Little ones to Him belong.

And yes and amen, Trudy,, there is healing in His name. He longs to bless His wounded daughters with a healing touch. A most pivotal part of this difficult story.

    • I’m crying with you, Linda – “God have mercy on us all.” “His wounded daughters.” Yes, He longs to bless them with His healing touch. Our hearts may ache with longing for them to find healing, but God’s ache for them is infinitely greater. May God fill us with His love and compassion and help us to always have healing words and actions towards the wounded!

  6. Your compassion shines through on both sides of this, Trudy. It’s so important not to judge those who made the choice to abort but unfortunately women have experienced this and/or fear it. May the love of God shine through us instead of any condemnation from our brokenness!

    • If we offer love and support to those who abort never means we don’t have compassion for the babies, so thank you for noticing I care about both sides, Lynn. Praying this with you – “May the love of God shine through us instead of any condemnation from our brokenness!” Amen! May we always remember that Jesus offers us love, not condemnation, and it’s Him we should follow!

  7. It is so incredibly heartbreaking. Such precious life and such silent grief and shame carried by so many. LORD have mercy on us all. Thank you for reminding me to pray, Trudy. I can’t even imagine how this must break God’s heart – both for the little ones and the Mamas crippled by silent shame and grief. I have had women very close to me lose little ones and seeing them walk through that was heartbreaking. And the awful thing is that some medical professionals are so so insensitive to the incredible gift of holding these little ones. I have read of some who have lost their babies never being given the opportunity to hold them- they were told there was nothing to hold. So so awful.

    • Yes, Anna. Incredibly heartbreaking. My heart aches for those innocent little ones and the mamas crippled by shame and grief. I have thought, too, how infinitely more heartbreaking it is to God. May God give us sensitive and loving hearts towards all who are hurting!

  8. In my nursing career I helped to support those struggling to conceive and stay pregnant, desperate to deliver a healthy child one day, and those (often young teens), who had made the heartbreaking decision, for personal or medical reasons, to abort the seeds of life within their wombs. None of it was easy or straightforward. All were in need of care, understanding, kindness, consideration and compassion. My heart ached for every wounded soul, all beloved daughters of the King of kings. So I can truly relate to this post, even though I haven’t had to face that kind of pain myself. Thank you, Trudy, for your loving, compassionate heart, and for shining such an empathetic spotlight on this heart-rending scenario. Bless you, sweet friend. xo 💜

    • So true, Joy. ALL are in need of “care, understanding, kindness, consideration and compassion.” I’m certain you were a caring, compassionate nurse. As you still are as a writer and friend. 🙂 Bless you, too! May God fill us so full of His love and compassion that it will naturally spill over to all we meet!

  9. I echo all these comments, Trudy … this is truth-filled and compassionate. I love the scriptures you include, and that song at the end? It’s one of my favorites from Ellie Holcomb (and also my Molly’s favorite). Hugs, dear friend!

    • Thank you, Lois. That’s cool that this song is one of Molly’s and your favorites. I love it, too. The words are so meaningful, aren’t they? It’s such a comfort to know we are loved so unconditionally by God. Hugs to you, too! May we always speak truth with love and compassion!

  10. Hi Trudy! I think it’s such a beautiful thing for you to highlight the tragedy of abortion. Sadly, that thought is counter-cultural in today’s society, and I’m not sure how that happened. So many think it’s a ‘womans right’ to take away the rights of someone else. So sad!
Thank you for writing and speaking out on the side of the poor little ones who have no voice but ours.
    Blessings,
    Ceil

    • Blessings to you, too, Ceil. Yes, it’s unspeakably sad! No one has the right to take a life created by God Himself. These poor little ones’ voices are snatched away. God instructs us, we are to speak out for the ones who can’t speak for themselves, right? My heart breaks at the thought of these little lives being snatched away, and God’s heart must break infinitely more. May God have mercy on us all!
