What Is a True Friend?

True Friendship Quotes

“A friend is one that knows you as you are, understands where you have been, accepts what you have become, and still, gently allows you to grow.”  William Shakespeare

“A true friend is someone who sees the pain in your eyes while everyone else believes the smile on your face.” Anonymous

“Friends can help each other. A true friend is someone who lets you have total freedom to be yourself – and especially to feel. Or, not feel. Whatever you happen to be feeling at the moment is fine with them. That’s what real love amounts to – letting a person be what he really is.” Jim Morrison

“We all need friends with whom we can speak of our deepest concerns, and who do not fear to speak the truth in love to us.” Margaret Guenther

“When you love, you wish to do things for. You wish to sacrifice for. You wish to serve.” Ernest Hemingway

“A friend shares the good times and helps out by listening during the bad times.” Molly Oliver

“A true friend encourages us, comforts us, supports us like a big easy chair, offering us a safe refuge from the world.” H. Jackson Brown

“True relationship: Love without condition, talk without intention, listen without judging, give without reason and care without expectation.” Anonymous

“A true friend loves
regardless of the situation…”
Proverbs 17:17 VOICE

We fall short of being true friends in so many ways, don’t we?

It can hurt so deeply when those we thought were “friends” betray, slander, or reject us. But we have to guard our hearts from bitterness or from putting up walls that won’t let anyone in or let any of our love out. It’s hard, isn’t it?

Ultimate Friendship

There will always be one Totally True Friend. Jesus always has and always will remain faithful and steadfast.  He knows our deepest secrets, and yet He will never betray us.  He loves us without condition. He doesn’t condemn us, even when we have hurt Him. He has paid the ultimate sacrifice for us, and He will never, never, never leave us or forsake us.

“There must be Someone in heaven who knows the truth about me,
in highest heaven, some Attorney who can clear my name—
My Champion, my Friend,
while I’m weeping my eyes out before God.
I appeal to the One who represents mortals before God
as a neighbor stands up for a neighbor.”
Job 16:19-21 The Message
“One who has unreliable friends
soon comes to ruin,
but there is a friend
who sticks closer than a brother.”
Proverbs 18:24
“I have told you these things so that
you will be filled with My joy.
Yes, your joy will overflow!
This is My commandment:
Love each other in the same way I have loved you.
There is no greater love than to
lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
John 15:11-13

    • Thank you! I value your friendship, too, Jennifer! 🙂 I love hearing how God uses you for Jack and Jill, too, and the other way around. 🙂 Animals can show such unconditional love, can’t they? You are blessed to have them, and they are blessed to have you! May we daily cling to the Best Friend of all!

          • WP is “funny” in that posts come to my email; I LOVE reading each and every post but… to respond, I have to sign on and sometimes am just not able to do that. Regardless, I want you to know that each and every post you write uplifts me at the time I read your posts and throughout the day and beyond. I count your posts as one of my many blessings… THANK YOU, Trudy! ❤

              • I wish I could put into words as eloquently as you, Trudy, how people and events have touched my life giving me hope and renewing my faith that all is as it should be! It can’t be a coincidence! And these people and events (and posts) come at a time when I most need to hear their words or be touch by a person or an event! I can’t explain these “signs” but I am so very grateful! To try to explain… I can’t. But it is through these blessings I am able to get up every morning and start another day facing whatever the future may hold. I know… this probably doesn’t make any sense. Maybe having your post in my “inbox”(and not being able to respond right away) is another blessing? This way, I go back and read & reread which has helped on more than one occasion! Blessings to YOU for the gift you give in your posts ❤

                • You make total sense, Jennifer. 🙂 I wouldn’t call myself eloquent. I learned to worry less about that and more about following God’s lead. And don’t shortchange yourself. You explain things well. 🙂 God uses both of us in His own way, my friend. Your posts have blessed me as well, more than you realize. 💞🙏🏻

  1. Absolutely loved this reflection on friendship, Trudy, and the importance of having true and loving friends in our lives, as well as being one for others. It gives me such comfort knowing that I have a best friend in Jesus, always and forever. What a blessing!
Blessings to you, my dear friend!

    • It gives me such comfort, too, Martha, to know we have a Best Friend in Jesus! A blessing indeed! As I look back on my life, I don’t know how I would have made it to this point without Him. Blessings to you, too, friend! May we daily lean into our Best Friend and appreciate His precious love!

    • Good morning to you, too, Linda! I am grateful with you that Jesus stays dear and close and loving. And like you commented to me at your post, I am also “learning that as we begin to grasp the depth of His love for us and rest in its bounty, our need for endless affirmation and strokes start to fade.” Oh, so true! May we learn ever deeper to grasp the depth of His love for us!

  2. These are such inspiring and thought-provoking quotes about friendship. I especially appreciate Shakespeare’s words. They sum up true, loving friendship so succinctly. But oh how we all fall short! I mourn not being the kind of friend I really want to be because I often fail to stay in touch regularly and rarely see my real life friends for months. Although they understand the challenges my health presents, and we always pick up as though we met up the day before, it’s still not an ideal scenario.
However, having Jesus as our best and most faithful Friend is a truly wonderful gift! He will never let us down, fail to love us or misunderstand us. I love the song as well. One of my favourites. Thank you, Trudy, for the beautiful encouragement you share here, and for being such a kind, understanding and faithful friend to me! xo ❤

    • I thank you as well, Joy, for being a kind, understanding, and faithful friend. Shakespeare’s quote is my favorite, too. But yes, we fall so short. I identify with you in keeping up with real life friends, but I am grateful God gives us online friends. Like you. 🙂 And like you, I’m especially grateful for our best and most faithful Friend. We could never manage without Him, could we? May our friendship with Him deepen more and more as we embrace His infinite love for us!

  4. All wonderful quotes you’ve shared Trudy. My favourite today is the Jim Morrisson quote. To be allowed to suddenly be ‘out of character’ with feelings and reactions, and still completely be loved is a dear friend!

    • So true, Lynn. To be allowed to be who we are, feelings or no feelings, silent or talkative, and still be loved is truly a gift. May God send us friends like that! Isn’t it a wonder how that is so much like God and infinitely more? I am blessed to have you for a friend! May we always lean into our Best Friend!

  6. Trudy,
That is one of my favorite hymns. It is such a comfort to know Jesus is always our faithful friend. Thankful for your friendship, too. Many blessings, love, and hugs to you 🙂 Several weeks ago, as I was praying a Trauma Prayer for myself, I also prayed it for you, because of what you’ve shared in the past. Keep being a light 🙂

  7. Trudy, such a beautiful post. Each of the quotes about true friends was so descriptive. And the words from God’s Word were so fitting. How amazing to know that we are known in the inmost part of who we are by the One who loves us most. I thank you for your gift of friendship!
