Thoughts on Courage

Courage Is Possible Through God’s Grace
He Is With Us
He Will Never Leave Us

“Be strong. Take courage. Don’t be intimidated.
Don’t give them a second thought because God,
your God, is striding ahead of you.
He’s right there with you.
He won’t let you down; He won’t leave you.”
Deuteronomy 31:6 The Message
I have told you these things,
so that in Me you may have
 [perfect] peace.
In the world you have tribulation and distress and suffering,
but be courageous
 [be confident, be undaunted, be filled with joy];
I have overcome the world.”

[My conquest is accomplished, My victory abiding.]”

John 16:33 AMP
“But when I am afraid,
I will put my trust in You.
I praise God for what He has promised.
I trust in God, so why should I be afraid?
What can mere mortals do to me?”
Psalm 56:3-4

Courage Quotes

(Some of my favorite courage quotes from my Quote Page.)

“Courage, the original definition of courage, when it first came into the English language — it’s from the Latin word cor, meaning heart — and the original definition was to tell the story of who you are with your whole heart.” – Brené Brown

“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea
that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you’re licked
before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.
You rarely win, but sometimes you do.”

- Atticus Finch in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird

Courage means not allowing your limitations to eclipse God’s possibilities.” ~ Christine Caine

“Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says I’ll try again tomorrow.” – Mary Anne Radmacher

    • I’m so glad God gave you these reminders when you needed them, Anna. Isn’t it amazing how God plants something in our hearts that will bless someone who needs it? Also directs us to read something that comes at exactly the time when we’re needing it? You are a blessing, too! I pray you and Bettie are filled with the Spirit to guide you with the book and podcasts! May we daily lean into God’s grace where our courage comes from!

  1. I fear year’s ago Courage was the word I chose for that particular year. And was very encouraged by Brene Brown’s book Daring Greatly! It takes courage to be a women of faith too which really hasn’t changed with the passing of time. And courage to place words of faith out in a public platform! Thanks for your courage to share your story and follow God’s plan for you to spread His loving messages Trudy!

  2. Wonderful en”courage”ment for our hearts today, Trudy! I love that the root for the word courage comes from the Latin meaning “heart.” When we give our whole hearts to God, He will give us the strength to stand bravely.
    Blessings, my friend!

    • I love that root, too, Martha. It’s so true that when we give our whole hearts to God, He will give us the strength to stand bravely. Blessings to you, too! May God give us the grace to give Him our WHOLE heart, not just a part!

  3. This is a great collection of verses and quotes, Trudy! I love Psalm 56:3. It’s a great reminder that courage is not being free from fear, but choosing to trust in God despite our fear. The Mary Anne Radmacher quote is another favourite of mine, because I think sometimes we can show courage in ways that might not be apparent to others. It may seem like a small thing to them but it is a big thing to us. I love that God knows that and he sees when we are showing courage and trusting him even if it doesn’t look like much to others. Love and hug to you!

    • Psalm 56:3 has often been an encouragement to me, too, Lesley. I love that it says “What time I am afraid” and not “I will stop being afraid.” Like you said, it’s about choosing to trust despite our fear. And that particular quote is so comforting, isn’t it? Thank you for pointing out how God knows and sees when we are showing courage and trusting Him even if it doesn’t look like much to others. I love that, too! Love and hugs to you, too! May we daily choose to trust God and His plan despite our fears!

  4. What a beautiful song, Trudy. I’m so glad you put together this little collection about courage this week … it’s very timely for me right now! Lots of unknowns and the need to take one thing at a time and not get too far ahead with worries and fears … love and hugs, dear friend!

    • My heart fills with gratitude that this collection about courage is timely for you, Lois. My heart aches for you with all the frightening changes in your life. It can be so hard not to worry and fear, can’t it? Love and hugs to you, too! Through whatever lies ahead, may our hearts take courage in the truth that God is with us and will never abandon us! May He give us courage to keep taking one thing at a time!

    • So true, Rebecca. Thank you for sharing this verse with us – “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” Oh yes, we need His peace so much! May His peace fill our hearts and minds and push out all fear!

  5. Courage matters and our need for it only seems to grow deeper with time. Thanks for sharing the verses, words, music that have built courage into you, friend.

You show us how to do brave. Thank you for being willing to lead the way …

    • Oh Linda, I really don’t feel brave at all. So often I am trying to convince myself along with readers that there is hope and courage in Jesus. I find, too, that the need for courage grows deeper with time. May we lean into Jesus and allow Him to fill our hearts with His power and love so that we can be brave!

    • I’m right with you in courage not coming naturally, Lisa. Sometimes it can be so taxing to try to be courageous. Perhaps being introverts makes it harder, too? May we daily open our hearts to be filled by our Ultimate Courage-Giver!

  6. Dear Trudy,
This post came out on a day that was extremely hard for me, and my hands were not able to type a comment here. But please know that your words were such an encouragement to me at just the right time! I am thankful that my hands have eased up some, and I can let you know what a blessing you are! Love and hugs to you dear friend. xo

  7. Trudy, each of these quotes was beautiful and so full of meaning! Thanks for sharing these. In a week where there’s a lot weighing on me, remembering that God strides ahead of me, that He walks beside me is reassuring. And each one of those courage quotes is profound. Loved them.

And the song? Yes, one of my favorites too. You’re speaking to my heart, friend!

  8. I love all of these quotes and inspiring Bible verses but the one that stands out the most to me is the Christine Caine quote. I want to remember to let God’s possibilities eclipse my limitations–which are many! 😉 Thanks for sharing, Trudy!

    • I’m so glad you enjoy these, Beth. I, too, want to remember to let God’s possibilities eclipse my limitations! It’s so easy to let our limitations eclipse His possibilities, isn’t it? I know I so easily doubt His power. I’m glad He is so patient with me. May our hearts remember that the same power that rose Jesus from the dead is in within us and that with God, nothing is impossible!

  9. Oh what marvellously encouraging Bible verses, thoughts and song! It’s so reassuring to know God is in the waiting. He’s involved at every stage. Even when we don’t sense His presence with us or receive specific guidance. Hope is essential to help keep us afloat, rather than sinking into despair. I love the quotes as well, especially the one from Christine Caine. So often my limitations seem to stand in the way of forward progress. Or maybe it just looks like that. Thank you for this beautiful encouragement, Trudy! I meant to come over and read it earlier in the week but God knew just when I needed to receive these inspiring words. Blessings, love and hugs! xo ❤

    • It’s amazing how God works and gives us just what we need when we need it, isn’t it? I’m so glad you’re encouraged. I’ve been thinking a lot about God being in the waiting, too. Yes, it truly is reassuring. And those limitations… It can be discouraging, right? May we both look to God’s possibilities! Blessings, love, and hugs to you, too! May we cling to HOPE to keep us afloat!

    • I have seen something of your Brave Faith journey at your site and in your book, Mary. It certainly does take a lot of courage for us to get through this journey of life. And it’s so true that we just keep on discovering more. May we learn ever deeper the faithful giving of our God from whom all our courage comes!

  10. Love these quotes and the song – this is the verse I am clinging to right now Psalm 27:14 and it reminds me of the song you shared too!!:

“Here’s what I’ve learned through it all:
    Don’t give up; don’t be impatient;
be entwined as one with the Lord.
Be brave and courageous, and never lose hope.
Yes, keep on waiting—for he will never disappoint you!” Psalm 27:14 TPT
