God Hears Our Cries and Yearns For Us To Open Our Eyes to His Bottomless Well of Love

Do you feel alone, rejected, and misunderstood?  With nowhere to turn? Like even God has left you?

When Abraham sent away Hagar and Ishmael, they wandered in the desert. Aimlessly. With a canteen of water and some food that soon ran out. Now what?

As their bodies dehydrated, they became weak and lethargic. Hagar couldn’t bear seeing her son die, so she hid him under one of the bushes and distanced herself. She sat down and sobbed. Doesn’t anyone care?

Then an angel called to Hagar, “What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there.”

Hagar was physically weak from lack of water and spiritually devastated of hope. But God graciously reminded her that He hears. And He lifted her head and opened her eyes to see a well, and hope surged through her soul. She got up, filled her water skin, and gave her son a drink.

While man-made wells can and do run dry, the well of Jesus’ love is bottomless and will never, ever run dry. It’s available to each of us, waiting for us to drink freely from it. It’s full to overflowing of:

Yearning love that “longs to be gracious” to us.

Selfless, sacrificial, and redeeming love that came down to become “an atoning sacrifice for our sins.”

Unconditional, nonjudgmental, and freeing love that holds “no condemnation” for those who believe in Him.

Replenishing, restoring love that says to those whose hope has dried up, “I will put breath in you, and you will come to life.”

Healing love that heals our broken hearts and binds up our wounds.

Compassionate, understanding love that “empathizes with our weaknesses.”

Never-abandoning love that says, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

Unfailing love that reaches to the heavens and is priceless.

Sometimes our grief-blinded eyes and our pain-crushed hearts can focus only on the pit of our misery rather than the hope God places right in front of us. The hope that He sees and hears us always. The hope that His love is faithful and will never reject us.

If you are having a difficult time, may Jesus hold you up and strengthen you. May He lift you and carry you when you can’t go any further. May He each morning not only open our eyes to His never-emptying well of love, but also empower us to drink from it.

“But whoever drinks of the water
that I will give him shall never thirst;
but the water that I will give him
will become in him a well of water
springing up to eternal life.”
John 4:14

God Loves You
by Jaci Velasquez

“In the quiet, love is reaching.
It`s yours to hold,
Be still and know that
Even when you`re lost and lonely,
And hope is gone, you`re not alone.
Far beyond the understanding,
There`s a hand that leads,
If you believe.
Through the darkness, see the light.
Remember God loves you.”

    • Blessings to you, too, Martha! I’m glad the reminders of God’s love for us comforted you. As your heart aches for your grandkids, it’s a comfort to know God aches with us and He never moves away from us. May we cling to that Truth!

  1. Dear Trudy,
Oh what a gift your post is to my heart this morning. And then, as I saw your graphic of the baby robin, I knew there was something special the Lord was speaking. … I had awoken this morning to hear the song of a robin. When I was having my breakfast, he was still singing but I couldn’t see him. And then here was the photo and verses to tie it all together: God sees and loves me right here in this moment. Thank you sweet friend for sharing such encouragement from the heart of the Lord. May you be blessed with that same love. xoxo

    • I’m so grateful the Lord spoke to you through the photo and verses, Bettie. It encouraged my heart, too, to see that photo I took years ago of that baby robin in our hanging basket. And I felt nudged to share it again, so I added it yesterday. What encourages me even more is how God works. I had written most of this post weeks ago, but every time I thought of posting it, I felt God say, “Not yet.” That has happened more than once with this post. God works in such powerful, mysterious ways! I, too, have been hearing the robins, but I haven’t been able to see one yet. May our all-seeing and ever-loving God open our hearts to every gift He sends us!
P.S. Recently one of my granddaughters gifted me with a painting she created of the sun and sky. On it, she wrote, “God paints the sky for you evryday.” (Even her spelling of “everyday” is priceless.) It has often encouraged me, and I just felt like sharing this with you.

      • Oh, Trudy, what a precious gift from the Lord through the hands of your granddaughter. He really does gift us each and every day. May I remember that thought also now! Please let your granddaughter know that her gift blessed me also! xoxo

        • Yes, I’ll let my granddaughter know. 🙂 May we together remember God paints the sky for us each day! I’m trying to remember that even when the skies are cloudy and gray. 🙂 xoxo back to you!

  2. What comforting words on a glum rainy day when you long to feel the warmth of sunshine. Your words let the Son shine in. What a precious gift He gave you to pen words with such thoughtfulness and artistry. Love you, Trudy. So glad our lives intersected but can’t even remember how that happened! Do you?

    • I’m so glad you’re comforted on the glum rainy day you’re experiencing, Sita. Those days can make us feel gloomy. I often long to feel the warmth of sunshine, too! It warms my heart that in these words/verses, the Son shines in yours. I’m glad, too, that our lives intersected. I don’t remember how either. But it’s a blessing to have “met” you. Even though you don’t blog as much anymore, I still enjoy your tributes to your sons and recently to your “daughter-in-love.” And I love when you stop in here once in a while. 🙂 May our hearts open more and more to the sunshine of God’s love!

  3. Thank-you for blowing hope into my mind and heart today. God always sees us and brings us exacty what we need when we lift our eyes to Him. Like Hagar, may we all hear His whispers and see His love, even if it is a Robin’s song like Bettie’s!

I hope the comments someone gave didn’t discourage you. I felt some of it was hurtful. I don’t have your email, but if you feel like it, you’re welcome to email me. It’s on the right hand side. May we both keep drinking of the bottomless well of love Jesus has for us and keep healing ever deeper! May we keep replacing the lies with God’s truth of who we are in Him!

  4. I missed you last week, Trudy … glad to see you here today! Your post reminds me of the old hymn “O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus” (the Selah version is the one going through my head). His love is perfect, isn’t it? Hugs, friend.

    • Thank you, Lois. I was sick with a virus last week. Though I’m much better, some symptoms are still lingering. That’s a great song, too. I actually almost posted it here until I found the one by Jaci Velasquez. Yes, His love is perfect! May His perfect love cast out all our fears! Hugs to you, too!

  5. Trudy, there is so much beauty in this post! I love the story of Hagar and how God met her in the desert. And I love the application you bring to her story. God’s love for His children is beyond amazing, beyond comprehension. I am so thankful He loves me in my own imperfections, sometimes too-introspective, and continually-falling-short ways.

This (among other things you wrote) spoke to me: “Sometimes our grief-blinded eyes and our pain-crushed hearts can focus only on the pit of our misery rather than the hope God places right in front of us. The hope that He sees and hears us always. The hope that His love is faithful and will never reject us.”

Just beautiful my friend. Love and blessings to you!

    • Thank you, Jeanne. I’m so glad this spoke to you. His love is truly amazing. We couldn’t live without it, could we? I, too, am thankful “He loves me in my own imperfections, sometimes too-introspective, and continually-falling-short ways.” Love and blessings to you, too! I’ve been thinking a lot about your traveling husband lately. May you all be spared from the coronavirus! Above all, may we more and more open our hearts to God’s deep love that will never leave us, no matter what happens!
